Starting university can feel like you're stepping onto a rollercoaster, full of excitement, anticipation, and a touch of nerves.
That's where PALS Leaders like Siobhan come into the picture, smoothing the transition and enhancing your UOW College experience.
Siobhan's journey to becoming a PALS Leader began when she encountered Peer Leaders at the College who were always welcoming and encouraging.
She says, "My own experiences at the College were highlighted by my interactions with Peer Leaders, who were always welcoming and encouraging. I also just love meeting new people and getting to know them."
Interestingly, becoming a PALS Leader didn't just help others; it had a profound impact on her own academic journey.
"Being a PALS leader has helped me become a stronger communicator, build my confidence and learn to convey information as clearly as possible," she explains.
"I feel like my academic performance has really improved, because I can apply what I learn from assisting students to my own studies."
First PALS Session? Just Go for It!
If you're pondering whether to attend a PALS session for the first time, Siobhan has some encouraging words.
"Just go for it! Normally students are considering PALS because they have a question about their subject, or are just curious to see what it’s all about."
Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment
Creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere during PALS sessions is integral to Siobhan.
She shares, "I do my best to make sure everyone understands that there is no such thing as a silly question, and make sure they leave the session feeling supported and like they have gotten something out of it."
The Reward: Seeing Students Succeed
Witnessing students make significant progress and overcome challenges is particularly rewarding for Siobhan.
"It’s really nice when you can see the exact moment that everything begins to click, and those students go on to get Distinctions or High Distinctions for that same task!" she says.
