Amrit Kaur Helps Students Soar in Liverpool.
Amrit Kaur was always a favourite with the student nurses she took under her wing when she was working in hospitals. She would always take the time to speak to them and provide opportunities to learn and grow.
“I worked as an emergency nurse and taught a Bachelor of Nursing in India, doing clinical teaching before I came to Australia. I am very interested in teaching and passionate about it,” she says.
Throughout her career, Amrit has helped educate hundreds of new nurses as they began their journey into the health care system. She has worked as a Registered nurse and Clinical facilitator in hospitals, and aged care settings, as well as a teacher in both universities and TAFE colleges.
Amrit recently landed her dream job as the Nursing Team Leader of the new UOW College Diploma of Nursing course at the UOW Liverpool campus. “I saw this opportunity and wanted to use my mentoring and leadership skills in a way to benefit the students,” she says.
She has already started to put her words into action by ensuring the students that come through UOW College, UOW Liverpool campus have an enjoyable educational experience and graduate with the same sort of passion she has for their own careers.
“We recently had a chat with students at the College and many said one of the reasons they chose the College was because it had the pathways program into the Bachelor of Nursing. They see it as an opportunity to do further study and they also said that being part of the University of Wollongong gives them a sense of being a university student,” she says.
“We have a fantastic campus where students can enjoy that university experience without feeling overwhelmed. Some students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and we can help them grow.”
“Having worked as a Registered Nurse for many years, I gained a lot of experience in medical, surgical, rehabilitation and disability sector. So, I share my experiences with the students, which they love.”
Amrit says the principles of nursing are the same throughout the world. Fortunately, in Australia, there are opportunities be more flexible in educating new nurses about these principles. Listening to the needs of her students is a big part of her practice.
“I like to actually listen to the students’ side of the story as well so I can understand what they may need. I love to shape the future nurses of Australia and know that they can actually help someone in real need.”
