Wollongong felt like a long way from her home in Saitama, Japan, but Natsumi was determined to make a difference in her life.
Choosing Australia
“I felt like I needed a big change in my life” says Natsumi.
She was determined to regain her passion and confidence, and thought studying abroad may help with that.
“When I was a kid, my mother always told me Australia is a very good place,” says Natsumi, whose mother spent some time working in the country.
“The people are so kind and warm, and there is a lot of nature, even around the city.”
Based on her mother’s experience, Natsumi felt Australia would be the best environment to pursue an education in business.
Gaining foundational skills
“When I searched [UOW College] on the internet, I saw there was a lot of support for students.”
Natsumi knew the support offered at UOW College would help her reach her academic goals. The Wollongong campus also offered opportunities for improving her English-speaking skills.
“It’s a little bit far from the city, so there are fewer Japanese students,” she says.
“I thought it could be helpful for me to converse in English in my daily life.”
The intimacy and diversity of her English for Tertiary Studies course meant she was able to connect with students from a variety of backgrounds.
“There are so many kinds of students, from different nationalities, ages, and education levels.”
With the help of her teachers and fellow students, Natsumi gained foundational skills which have helped her to excel in her Diploma of Business.
Support in her journey
Now in the second session of her Diploma of Business, Natsumi knows she can always ask her Peer Learning Leaders for a little extra help.
“Even when the teacher is busy, and I’m stuck on something, the Peer Learning Staff always help me.”
Natsumi feels the Diploma of Business has given her an excellent start in considering her future career.
“In the Diploma, you learn different subjects each semester,” she says.
This allows her to explore her options and get a sense for what aspects of the field really inspire her.
“If I can make a foundation to start a business, I think that’s so helpful”, says Natsumi.
With the support and expertise provided by UOW College staff, this foundation is made even stronger.
What’s next?
The future is filled with opportunities for Natsumi. After her Diploma, she plans to transition into the second year of a Bachelor of Business and major in Management.
In the meantime, Natsumi is already gaining work experience and growing her confidence as UOW College’s Ambassador for Japan.
“I know many wonderful aspects of UOW life, so I'm really happy to share them.”
Natsumi hopes to continue to enhance current students’ College experience and share her story with those considering UOW College.
Her journey is a testament to the life-changing abilities of a supportive community and quality education.
