A serendipitous opportunity ignited Cavan's interest in geology. UOW College provided the pathway, showing it’s never too late to pursue your passion.
From being a barista to studying acting, to working as a snowboarding instructor, Cavan has experienced many different paths. However, it wasn’t until Cavan’s housemate was in a moment of need that he discovered his passion for science.
“My housemate (a geologist) told me he’d run out of people to go on an expedition. Just two weeks later, I was off away [on expedition] for about a month in the middle of nowhere,” Cavan says.
This unexpected expedition ignited his interest and Cavan was drawn to the way science works and challenges him.
“You're using your brain in a very interesting way. Because you're piecing together puzzle pieces that are so far apart when you're out there,” Cavan explains.
The flexibility that a career in science allows is perfect for Cavan, providing him with career prospects that match his lifestyle.
“There are so many different fields that you can go into. You can go spend your time out in nature, either with a small group of people or bigger. Then you're able to also have this life back in a city society setting,” Cavan says.
Making it a reality
Cavan’s interests in science had been peaked but how would he make it a reality? In his case, UOW College was the best pathway to university.
A Diploma of Science at UOW College provides a pathway for Cavan into his second year of a Bachelor of Science. Not long after beginning his studies at UOW College, he realised the additional benefits of this option, including a supportive, hands-on, and engaging environment.
Any concerns Cavan had about going to university as a mature age student have been expelled by the support he receives at UOW College. With one-on-one help from teachers, Cavan’s education has thrived.
“That extra help is what makes the difference between the university and college,” he says.
Focusing on deeply understanding the concepts rather than just trying to get through the material is important to Cavan, and UOW College supports have allowed him to achieve this.
“Since getting teachers help, I've been able to understand and then communicate better with other people in my class.”
“You have more hands-on time with teachers,” Cavan says.
The future is exciting for Cavan
Although Cavan isn’t set on his career goals yet, his look towards the future is inspiring.
“Do your best every day and then improve every day on everything. And do it with integrity, honesty, kindness and wisdom,” Cavan says.
UOW College has set Cavan up to be excited by his studies. Approaching each challenge as a small step in a big journey, Cavan has made it further in his studies than he could have ever imagined. In Cavan’s words and actions, his journey proves that it's never too late to find a passion—and to pursue it wholeheartedly.
